What Are Domain Name Status Codes?

When searching for registration information pertaining to a specific domain, you will come across a list of information. If you often perform WHOIS searches, you may wonder what the section labeled Domain Status, sometimes just marked as Status, actually means. In this article, we will take a look at the various types of domain name status codes, also referred to as Extensible Provisioning Protocol domain status codes (EPP).

If you register or resell domains, it is important to understand the various EPP domain status codes as they often explain why a particular domain has either stopped working or is experiencing issues. EPP domain status codes are important because they determine when your domain can be registered by someone else should you forget to renew your registration. They also protect your domain from being swiped by someone else, usually referred to as domain hijacking.

To see the full meaning report of each entry in a WHOIS search, see this article.

What are EPPs?

Extensible Provisioning Protocol (EPP) domain status codes were created by ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) as a way to differentiate domain registries from domain registrars. They are required whenever a domain name is registered and work to prevent domain hijacking. Each domain has at least one EPP domain status code. However, some domains can have more than one.

There are two types of EPP domain status codes: one for clients, and another for servers. To see the EPP domain status of your domain, you can perform a WHOIS lookup at whois.net. Once the search results return, you will see one of the following EPP domain status codes. Below you can see the domain status code as well as what it means in regards to your domain.
